Got yet another reminder of how fast the online world is changing the other day when I heard about the 'wonderful and new' Yahoo email service due to come 'live' in June this year.
Their message told of ...
The way I see things, it's like, these days, if you don't have or (as in our case) can't afford the very latest gadgets and gizmos like tablets or G3/4 mobile phones ... very soon now you're likely to become obsolete and placed very firmly on the 'back burner' of society, whether you like it or not ...
Everything we touch online is quickly becoming optomized for those same devices... tablets, i-pads and 4G phones (this was written in 2014 so if you're reading this in 2015, please replace G4 with G5 etc etc etc).
This in turn has already thrown up some online world problems ...for me any way.

Take #Twitter for example, if I'm using Google Chrome (which I adore because it's so fast and responsive) I'm not able to do anything much else than read and generally move around the site ...
No tweeting, no RT'ing, no ... you get the picture ... It's so frustrating ...
However, if I switch over to our other browser, IE8, Twitter allows me to tweet and do all the other things Twitter would have me do, except it's Soooo Slow and frustratingly moody even then.
Mostly, after one tweet, it slows down to a point where it's simply not possible to continue on the site.

And for all of the above I blame their (Twitter's) focus on having their site instantaneously accessible by the very latest in tablets and fancy mobiles.
Users of said devices don't seem to have any such problems.
And now Yahoo is moving in the same direction.

When Yahoo changed its groups format I found I was unable to enter Any info into the group databases, due in my opinion, to the above problems ... ( too slow in IE8 or no functions available in Chrome ) eitehr way no can do ... and I'm not alone in that either. Many a group Admin has had to go to a lot of bother entering basic info for those who find themselves with problems similar to those mentioned above.
I'll be frank; I used to rant that Microsoft thought nothing about those of us unable to access their very latest and best products. My stance was one that could be explained in the following way ...
If the system before the very latest one had worked for us, why not keep it in operation?
Those of us a low fixed income or who don't actually Need to be everything, everywhere, all of the time .. would be happy bunnies were #Microsoft to keep old browsers and such like on the go ...
But no ... I always felt as if I was a voice crying in the wilderness ... That was back then. Now it looks like its the same old same old with #Yahoo and #Twitter et al.

Surely, with times such as those we live in, there is an strong argument for keeping backward linkages accessible? For keeping older versions of Windows (for Old computers) accessible to those that can make use of them and have no need for anything more ...
Bottom line ... I feel it's not only those of us who can't afford or don't need the very latest technology that would benefit were such 'retro' changes be made. Surely big business would be praised for its 'social awareness' making such a move in their interests too?
